Marije Brouwer (27)

favorite snack: chocolate and fruit juice
favorite shoes: Nike air
addicted behavior: rubbing her nose for good luck
quote: live life out of your imagination

Marije grew up in a typical small Frisian village where you could distinguish typical groups of youngsters. As shy as she was, she liked to spend a lot of time in her own house with her family. Still, she had a lot of friends that she loved to talk to via the telephone. She said that she could spend hours on the telephone with her friends and of course occasionally cracked under peer pressure and hung around the village center.

She loved playing with her many Barbies and made clothes for them herself. Her mother graduated in fashion design with a coupeuse degree which gave Marije a lot of inspiration. She explained about the degrees of fashion designer. There are in total 4 degrees ending with coupeuse. I forgot to ask her what the rest are, so I’ve been searching on the internet. The 4 degrees from beginner to professional are modinette, costumière, tailleuse and coupeuse. Marije graduated in modinette of fashion design at the age of 21. She didn’t carry on to the next degree because she liked it so much that she kind of forgot her school and school was more important and now that she almost finished with her study, she might go back and finish the rest and she can finally make all her own clothes.

She seems to have another thing that she’s very passionate about, which is music. She recently started to work at Cultural Center Oosterpoort in Groningen where they often have concerts and music festivals and EuroSonic Noorderslag (the European showcase festival) and her dreams are to become a music promotor and playing music in a band, making music in Electro-Indie style. Her grandmother was her big inspiration. At a young age she learned from her grandmother how to play notched flute, Alto flute, Tenor flute and Soprano flute.

I asked about her style and how she would call her style. She told me that everyone tells her that she’s different, even she thinks she is. Her style began with R&B/HipHop music inspiration. She would wear those big baggy jeans with her brother’s big t-shirt which no one else she knew wore these clothes.

I don’t want “standard”, I am “others”

From age of 17 until 24, she learned a lot about herself. She said “It was my grey phase, I wore boring clothes and found it difficult to determine who I am. I know better now that I’m getting older, you don’t care what other people think. I don’t have any troubles choosing clothes for myself in a store”. As we discussed about her style, I think I will put her in the category “others”. She has a vintage style, which is inspired by her mother and her grandmother, and being born in the 80s she has an inner 80s. She doesn’t have any jewelry except a necklace that she received from her grandmother “Rings, bracelets, earrings….I don’t know, they just don’t fit with my image”

Basically I just put whatever I like together
and cover them with an oversized cardigan.

Marije’s crazy about cardigans and it’s a must have/buy in every winter. She has many of them, but the special ones are from her grandmother, which she knitted herself. Winter season is her favorite time of year. She can do the layering and wear her oversized cardigans. Another must have thing for Marije in the winter is a nice scarf. “…and it has to be BIG”, she said.

It’s nicer in the winter; people are getting together,
concerts in nice venues and a cup of hot chocolate to finish it of.

Basic routine for everyday look takes her about 10 minutes to pick out an outfit. What seems to take longer time is her hairdo. She loves wild hair (I think she means messy but cool) and if she can’t get it right, she won’t leave her house.

I like talking to Marije. She’s so much fun and very creative. She will soon start a knitting club with some of her friends to keep creativity and ‘girlpower’ flowing. I wish her good luck with everything and I hope you guys get inspired from this interview. Please send me any comments you might have to info@o-ster.com. Thank you!
